Yankee Barbecued Spareribs

4 pounds meaty pork spareribs
Salt and pepper, to taste
1 lemon, thinly sliced
1 large onion, chopped
1 teaspoon chili powder
1 teaspoon celery seed


1/4 cup brown sugar
1/4 vinegar, or lemon juice
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 cup catsup
2 cups water

Spread ribs, meaty side up, in roasting pan.

Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Arrange lemon slices on ribs and brown, uncovered, in 450 degree oven for 45 minutes.

Mix remaining ingredients together to make sauce. Pour over ribs.

Reduce heat to 350 degrees and continue baking for 1-1/2 hours.

Do not cover, but baste and turn ribs occasionally.

If sauce gets too thick, add a little water.
